The accussations of a group of young girls started the witch hysteria in salem. Soon many people in the town were crying witch on others and from the use of torture the accussed witches gave up names of others saying they were witches in hopes that by cooporating their torture would be lessened. It is not likely that any of the people tortured and killed were actually witches at all. you can learn about this and more at www.thewitchescollective.com

List three similarities of the Salem Witch Trials to the Red Scare of the 1950s?

The Red Scare of the 1950s has been called a modern witch hunt. People were accused and convicted of Communism based on tenuous evidence like the witch trials; mass hysteria caused people to believe things that were ridiculous; and everyone realized how stupid it had been too late, lives had already been ruined.

What similarities and differences exist between events in Salem in 1692 and events in Washington dc during the 1950's?

According to the American playwright Arthur Miller, there weren't many differences. His play The Crucible is an extended consideration of the similarities between theMcCarthyism of the 1950s and the hysteria of the Salem Witch Trials of 1692 (NOT 1962). Both periods in America's history showcase the darker side of human nature and our ability to exhibit a mob mentality under the guidance of authority figures. The most significance difference would be that McCarthyism effected the entire country, whereas the Witch Trials were limited to a much smaller region of the nation.
