The Federalists and Centralists had different ideas about the formation of the United States.
In America at least, centralism refers to the want to centralize government (have one strong government that is in control of all the states) while federalism refers to the want for each state to be basically independent but united under a weak government (hence why the Southern states-who advocated states' rights over federal rights before the civil war-broke away and created the conFEDERAte states of America.
Only an anarchist would be against having a string national Government. What some Conservatives want is to go back to the Constitution and have a limited and strong Government. Our Government is there to provide stability for us to be able to pursue our dreams and goals. The problem with so many selfish people today is that they are interested in changing our Government into one that babysits anyone that does not wish to work. The real issue then becomes one of how long our Government can remain strong when any need to work is removed from the table. The real group that will cause a weak Government in our country are those that are demand more socialist tendencies from it.
I believe Abraham Lincoln was a federalist. He was against slavery and most people against slavery were feds. (Federalists were for the const't.) I believe Lincoln was born in the North were most feds. were b/c they did not have slaves. Like in the South were most anti feds were slaves and they wanted to count slaves as citizens ( see the Virginia plan and New Jersay plan were we then came up with the great compromise.) Wrong. Lincoln was not a federalist-he was a nationalist or centralist. Federalism means the states make the federal government, not the other way around. Abraham Lincoln was the absolute opposite of a federalist, he began the movement that slowly began taking away states' rights and made the federal government stronger.
The 3 levels of the U.S. government are: -State Government -Local Government -National Government

The Battle of the Alamo was fight by 190-250 Texan troops against about 1,800 of General Santa Anna's Mexican troops. Santa Anna wanted to punish the Texans for defying his government. The Texans wanted independence and liberty from Santa Anna's centralist government.
