A group of American leaders representing the colonies during the period leading up to the American Revolution is known as the Continental Congress. There were 55 men who are considered "founding fathers " and a majority were lawyers. Many were wealthy planters who had plantations and business men. They were the upper class of the colonies and the wealthiest men in the colonies. 90% of the colonies were farmers so this group of men were all ready the leaders in their home areas.

The leaders of the original thirteen colonies were William Bradford for the Massachusetts/Plymouth area, John Winthrop for Boston, Roger Williams for Rhode Island, Thomas Hooker for Connecticut, and John Wheelwright for New Hampshire. New York had two leaders, Peter Minuit for the Dutch and Duke of York for the English. New Jersey also had two, there Lord Berkeley and Sir Carteret led together. Peter Minuit for Delaware William Penn for Pennsylvania, John Smith for Virginia, George Calvert for Maryland and James Oglethorpe for Georgia. North and South Carolina each had a group of eight proprietors.

The committees of correspondence were bodies organized by the local colonial leaders of the Thirteen Colonies before and during the American Revolution for the purposes of coordinating written communication between separate cities and colonies.
