He recommended "Containment", which remained the official US policy until after the Vietnam War. Its end was also influenced by the fact that it then also transpired that the 'Domino theory" of the USA was incorrect, which held that if one nation fell to Communism, all its neighbors were bound to follow. They didn't.

The Containment policy held that Communism should remain contained within the areas where it was dominant around 1949; and that any effort of Communist countries or forces to expand beyond those areas should be forcibly repulsed by the USA. This policy led to US involvement in Cuba (the Bay of Pigs-disaster and the missile crisis), in the Korean War and in the Vietnam war.

Who was George keenan?

George Keenan was a foreign service officer for the United States and considered the "father of containment" -- the policy the US took against the USSR and communism during the Cold War. Keenan was highly influential under George Marshall's reign as Secretary of State under Truman. In fact, he became the first director of the Policy Planning Staff. In 1946 he sent a famous "long telegram" from Moscow that described the Soviets as insecure and expansionist by nature. In 1947 he published a letter titled "The Sources of Soviet Conduct" which appeared in Foreign Affairs -- given his role as a civil servant he signed it Mr. X.

What type of policy is most similar to which Cold War idea?

The policy of containment is most similar to the Cold War idea of preventing the spread of communism. Developed by U.S. diplomat George Kennan, containment aimed to limit Soviet influence globally and counteract the expansion of communist ideology. This strategy shaped American foreign policy throughout the Cold War, leading to various military and diplomatic actions, including the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

What were the efforts by the Truman administration and congress to stop communist influence in the US?

Two plans emerged during the Truman administration in attempt to stop the spread of Communism. The Truman Doctrine was a request to Congress to assist Greece and Turkey with aid such as food and weapons in their quest to stop Communism in those countries. $400 millions dollars went to Greece and $100 million went to Turkey. As a result, they both joined NATO in 1952. The other plan to come out of that era was the Marshall plan, or the European Recovery Program. Named after the Secretary of State George Marshall, this program was an incentive to all European nations rebuilding after World War II not to turn to Communism. Billions of dollars were spent to redevelop the infrastructures of those European nations. This plan went into effect in 1947 and lasted to 1951.
