The Battle of Bunker Hill, June 17, 1775, marked the first full-scale conflict of the Revolutionary War, as the British tried to relieve the siege of Boston. Most of the battle took place on neighboring Breed's Hill, rather than Bunker Hill, over which the Americans eventually retreated. The assault by the British galvanized colonial opinions of support for the revolution, and gave evidence that it might actually succeed.
