What will happen to the old dollar vs the amero?

There are some very general proposals circulating about the possibility of creating a North American Union, similar to the European Union. In the very unlikely event that such a thing would happen, a common currency would be needed and some have suggested that a new one called the Amero (like the Euro) would be that currency. Should that happen, the US dollar would, of course, be retired.

But the fact is that the current politics of the US, not to mention Canada and perhaps even Mexico, make a North American Union about as likely as the sun rising in the west tomorrow.
