Theodore Roosevelt's Progressive (aka Bull Moose) party was by-far the most successful third party. They won more votes in 1912 than the Republicans did.
However, they only lasted for that one election so their overall success can be questioned. The American Party (Know-Nothings) lasted about 15 years, won some seats in Congress and may have tipped the 1848 presidential election to Taylor. The Republicans started out as a third party but soon became a major party.
Splinter parties are minor parties that have experienced the most success in winning votes. In the United States, there are two dominant political parties.

The highest percentage of popular votes was Theodore Roosevelt's Bull-Moose Party which won 27.4 percent of the popular vote in the 1912 Presidential election, and carried six states. This was the best showing of an independent party in history, and the only time such a party has carried more than one-third of the popular vote. .
The Party Whip (UK)
by winning the electoral votes
Ralph Nader's Green party won over 97000 votes in Florida which was much greater than the 537 vote difference between Bush and Gore in that state and Florida's 25 electoral votes were enough to tip the election to Bush.Of course one can not say how these people might have voted if Nader was not on the ballot. There were several other minor parties on the ballot. People who voted for Nader knew they were making a protest vote and did not like either of the major party candidates.
minor, or third, parties appear from time to time. although no third-party candidate has ever been elected president, minor parties do affect election outcomes. they take votes from major parties and they call attention to certain issues.
Third party candidates have a difficult time winning electoral votes
Minor and Third parties play roles as spoiler by taking votes from a major candidate. If a third party member leans towards the republican party, then s/he may take votes from independents and moderates that may have otherwise voted for the republican candidate. This will result in the democratic candidate having a better chance of winning because votes for the republican party were split.
the minor party candidate is likely to draw votes from the opposition.
Certainly. The votes have to come from somewhere, and every minor candidate gets some votes.
minor and thrid parties play roles a spoiler by taking votes from a candidate.!?.
minor parties change election results by pulling votes from major party candidates?
In the U. S. Presidential Election of 1912, Progressive Party candidate Theodore Roosevelt received 88 votes while Republican Party candidate and incumbent President William Howard Taft received eight votes. Democratic Party candidate Woodrow Wilson won with 435 votes.
Minor parties change election results by pulling votes from major party candidates.
The Progressive Party also known as "Bull Moose"
Winning a majority of the votes means winning more than 50% of the total votes cast. Winning a plurality of the votes means less than 50 percent but more than any other candidate.
One of the major parties takes over their ideas ^^
To win in an election with 175 voters and 8 candidates, a candidate would need at least half of the total votes plus one. So, in this case, a candidate would need 88 votes (175 / 2 + 1) to win the election.
