federalist retain a great deal of power even after they were defeated by the democratic republicans because even though Jefferson ended the federalist program, John Adams had seen to that with the Judiciary Act. under this act Adams had appointed as many federalist judges as he could between the election of 1800 and Jefferson's inauguration in 1801.

Many were very sensitive to the development of a strong central government because of how they were mistreated by the British government before the Revolutionary War. The anti-Federalists wanted to prevent the formation of a federal government in order to retain their political and religious liberty. This resulted in a compromise, otherwise known as the Bill of Rights. :D
Differing views on these questions brought into existence two parties, the Federalists, who favored a strong central government, and the Antifederalists, who preferred a loose association of separate states. Impassioned arguments on both sides were voiced by the press, the legislatures, and the state conventions. In Virginia, the Antifederalists attacked the proposed new government by challenging the opening phrase of the Constitution: "We the People of the United States." Without using the individual state names in the Constitution, the delegates argued, the states would not retain their separate rights or powers. Virginia Antifederalists were led by Patrick Henry, who became the chief spokesman for back-country farmers who feared the powers of the new central government. Wavering delegates were persuaded by a proposal that the Virginia convention recommend a bill of rights, and Antifederalists joined with the Federalists to ratify the Constitution on June 25.
It failed because the colonies did not retain enough independence.

Alexander Hamilton was one of the founders of the Federalist Party, a staunch supporter of the Constitution who wrote many of the Federalist Papers encouraging the States to ratify the plan for government. The Federalists supported a strong central government and a ruling elite. They believed the average citizen was too ignorant to participate in government, or even to vote. The Federalists were opposed by the Anti-Federalists who later formed the Democratic-Republican party under Thomas Jefferson. Democratic-Republicans believed the states should retain more power; they were also slightly more populist than the Federalists.
