Initially, Marshall and Sutter attempted to keep the discovery a secret to prevent a rush of miners that could disrupt their plans for the land. However, news leaked, leading to the California Gold Rush, which drastically transformed the region and attracted thousands seeking fortune. Ultimately, the secret was short-lived as the allure of gold proved irresistible.

Much more gold has been found in recent years than was found in the Gold rush of 1849. Mostly because of modern mining methods not available to the miners in 1849 (such as heap leaching.) I read in a mining magazine that more Gold was found in 1994 than any year in this country's history.
In 1799 Gold was found in North Carolina, but it didn't amount to much. The 1828 discovery in Georgia was the first Gold Rush.
