The European Renaissance of the 14th-16th centuries had many profound results, with just one being the dramatic increase in respect for the value of the individual. To be true to oneself had always been important; however, after the rise of the Renaissance, particularly in Italy, this importance rose to new heights. It was a powerful contributor to the reforming zeal of individuals such as Martin Luther, who in the 1500s stood up against the Church out of loyalty to his conscience.
