Many Mesoamerican tribes chose to ally with the Spanish against the Aztecs due to longstanding grievances and rivalries. The Aztec Empire had exerted dominance over various tribes, demanding tribute and military service, which fostered resentment. Additionally, the Spanish offered opportunities for wealth and power, promising to support these tribes in their struggles against Aztec oppression. This alliance was seen as a chance for revenge and a way to diminish Aztec influence in the region.

They were much stronger. The Aztecs, at first, thought the arriving Spaniards were "people of Heaven". However, after the Spanish leader Cortes murdered their king and started looting all the wealth, primarily gold. Despite the Aztec's sophisticated society, they were no match for the conquistadors. Along with the Spanish conquistadors "conquerors" came missionaries, in an attempt to convert the Aztecs. Not long after the the Spanish arrived, the Aztec population was reduced to 10%. Simply put, the Aztecs were no match for the Spanish.
There is no longer any Aztec people in Mexico, as 'Aztec' is the definition of a culture and society that was destroyed by Spanish conquistadors almost 500 years ago. What remains is the genes of the Aztec people, who became a large portion of today's Mexicans, (close to 80%) thanks to interracial marriages with the Spanish conquerors. Also many indigenous people with the same ethnic group remain, known as the Nahua. There are over 2.5 million of them, but they are certainly not Aztecs.
