The potential loot attracted a mass of carpetbaggers who swooped on it's defeated provinces. It also provided employment for the manpower of impoverished peninsular Greece in the armies maintained by the Hellenistic states which the Persian Empire was broken up into when Alexander died. Greece became progressively depopulated with this flow of it's people to Asia and North Africa over the next three centuries.
