It would have been prudent for Neanderthal and Cro-Magnon man to sleep in a sitting up position. Weapons against animals that attacked them for food could be kept close by easily accessible before they had fire to keep them away. They would have put their backs against a stone wall of a cave more because of the room needed to accommodate their numbers and so sitting up sleeping solved at least 2 problems faced by our ancestors.

Some ancient civilizations, such as the Romans and the Greeks, did have specific reclining positions for sleep, like on couches or beds. However, evidence suggests that most ancient cultures probably slept lying down, like we do today. The preference for sleeping positions may have varied depending on the culture and time period.

Is sleeping sitting up good for you?

No, it is not. It causes strain on your back which hurts very bad. This isn't true, people have been sitting up to sleep, in chairs on the ground and in bed for hundreds if not thousands of years. I have a heart arrhythmia that requires that I am elevated and it does not hurt my back at all and keeps my heart beating comfortably. My sister has degenerative disc and has had back surgery and has to sleep sitting up when she has had pneumonia and this did not cause back pain at all. It actually relieved her pain because she had her legs partly elevated in bed. It may be bad for you if you have a particular injury or you are sitting in a stiff chair but for certain conditions especially of the heart and lung it is dr. recommended to sleep with several pillows propping you up as much as possible. As far as being good for a healthy person to sleep this way on a daily basis I don't know.

How can a person sleep sitting up?

Many people can fall asleep standing up. Though once the person falls asleep their body becomes very relaxed and will not be able to keep the body upright. You can sleep propped up but most likely you will fall over.

Reduce Sleep Apnea By Improving Sleep Posture ?

Sleep apnea can be improved by examining your sleep posture. If you tend to sleep in a fetal position or burrow your face into a pillow, your posture alone could be contributing to your sleep breathing. Try putting pillows around you and sitting up slightly to sleep. Just stopping your bad sleep habits may help decrease your apnea. If you have asthma, be sure to treat it because it will make apnea worse.
