Andrus indicates a Scottish origin. However, many Andruses were separatists and moved to European countries from

Scotland, seeking religious freedom. The census of 1840 in Winnebago Co., Illinois shows two households with the last name of Andrus., and they were related. In the 1850's Illinois census , it shows a large number of

Andruses emigrated to Winnebago Co, in Illinois and the census lists their country of origin as varied, Germany, France, Holland, Switzerland , as well as Scotland.. When you consider the political unrest, drouth and unemployment in Europe, that indicates the reason for leaving at that time. I have not had any information as to what the relationship was that caused them to come to that county in Illinois. Would be interested in answers to this.
