8 degrees
yes
yes the 1974 caprice classic came with a 350 small block
It will vary depending on the specs for the engine. But, if it's a small block you'll probably be all right with something like 10 or 12 BTDC on the 1974 cars. I know in later years they backed the factory timing down to 8 BTDC on some of the smog-era cars.
If it's still factory it will have an HEI ignition system.
400 small block 2brl was the basic engine with a 454 big block optional
According to the info I have these cars were available with four different engines. The 351 Windsor/Cleveland the 400 Cleveland (all small block) and the 460 engine (big block). Hope this helps.
The make and model would help because Ford, Chevy and Mopar made small blocks.
Darn near anything can be made to accept a small block Chevy. The easiest conversions would be to select a vehicle that was offered from the factory with a v8 Chevy engine. Try a 1974 Toyota Landcruiser AKA > "Chevota"
The base ignition timing for a 1974 Chevy 454 engine is between 8 and 12 degrees below top dead center. A timing light is needed to accurate set ignition timing.
The 2 barrel had 145 hp, the 4 barrel was 165.
My book only goes back to 1974. In 74 the timing for both the 230hp & the 275hp was 10 degrees before top dead center @ 1100 rpm. you may find that it likes 12-14 degrees better.
Your going to have trouble with that one. I remember 1974 like yesterday, but not a 366, big, or small block, from Chevy. If you are trying to say 396, again, trouble, as the 396 had morphed into the .030, version of the 402. There was a 348, but that died with the 409, in 63, I think, then there was the......
