2001 ford expedition sometimes i try to start it and the starter just spins but engine dont turn over you let off key and try again starts right up I replaced starter and still have same problem?

sounds like you need a new fly wheel, the fly weel must be missing teeth so when you try and start it it doesn't catch the first time but might catch the next.

Check your fuel filter, this may be dirty.

Then why did you replace a perfectly good starter? ALWAYS test old parts and know what you're doing BEFORE you start throwing new parts at a problem. Find out WHY it isn't starting. Does the starter engage and turn the engine? IF it does, then the starter is probably fine. If not, check the starter, battery, electrical connections, ignition switch and neutral safety switch. If the starter has ALWAYS engaged and turned the engine, you should not have changed the starter in the first place; instead, you should be finding out what's wrong.

I would start by jumping the terminals on the starter solenoind,just use a wrench and touch it between the two large terminals on the solenoid. If the starter takes off and works I would guess that your problem may be in the ignition switch located on the steering column. Sometimes even though the battery terminals look clean and the interior lights still light up, they can need cleaning. It is also possible that the wire into the terminal is not getting a good connection. This seems elementary, but it is the an easy solution and in my experience, this is most often the problem.

I'm not sure what you mean by "slips". Is the starter making a grinding noise or does the starter sound like it is missing the flywheel completely? My first thought was a bad starter drive (part of the starter) but if you replaced the starter with a new one it shouldn't be that.

Did you follow the starter alignment instructions when you replaced the starter? Are you getting oil on the Bendix? That could cause the starter gear to engage slowly. It is possible that the replacment starter has a problem. Also, if the previous starter had the same problem it could have damaged the gear on the flex plate.

crank sencer When I had the same problem it was the starter solenoid. It is built on the starter so you have to replace both. After the starter/solenoid was replaced I had no more problems. P.S. If you take it to most major auto parts places they can check the starter but not the solenoid mine showed good but after I replaced it I never had that problem again.

If you have headers put a heat shield over the starter. That is what fixed my 84 C-10 starter issues. If it is a gear alignment problem try shimming. If it is a electrical problem try the heat shield.
