Check your fuel filter, this may be dirty.
If I were testing it, I'd use a jumper wire from the direct battery lead to the ignition switch starter contact that's on the starter. If the solenoid engages and turns the starter I'd know the solenoid is good. If not, I'd verify that the battery and cable is good before pulling the starter. Not knowing anyone else's level of comfort/competence, I wouldn't recommend that procedure if you don't know your way around the described components.
remove battery terminal cables. remove positive cable from starter solenoid on top of starter. take two bolts out of starter housing attached to engine. remove starter. there's possibly a ground wire attached with one of the bolts holding the starter in. don't forget to put it back on the bolt when you put it in. bolts have 14mm or 9/16 inch head. use a socket, ratchet and extension.
I have a 2006 XL1200R that intermittently does the same thing (I'm wondering if it has something to do with primary chain tension).
the igniter in the distributor, they are aften going bad in hondas, and causes a huge head ache. This is what I've done so far., This happens intermittently. It used to happen during the summer months but now even during the winter months it's been happening more frequently. Here's what i replaced so far. First : Main relay, Ign Coil, Dist Cap, Rotor, Plug wires, Spark Plugs. It happened 2 more times after the items above were replaced. Next items I replaced is below. Fuel Pump Fuel strainer Fuel filter Note each time this happens the car starts the next day or two and happens again weeks or a month later . I don't know what else to check. If anyone have any ideas please let me know. Thanks
to be completeley honest im only 14 years of age and dont know a great lot but has the motor gone?
dude trust on this. its your starter motor, it happened to me once. it will just cranks and it feels like the battery is dying out but nope its your solenoid on your starter motor that is worn out. best of luck dude
It's attached to the starter.
Loose or corroded battery cables? Bad starter solenoid? Dead spot on starter? Bad neutral safety switch?
The starter solenoid is attached to and an integral part of the starter.

Try changing your solenoid...! It sounds like it's stuck in the connected position. Try tapping on it with the handle of a screw driver. that sometimes works. Sometimes it's the easy and cheap solution to a problem...!It happened to a friend of mine a long time ago. He said that it was the problem.Let me know if that was the problem. My e-mail address is (siredward57@new.rr.com).
Can be a defective ignition switch which I suspect is your problem. Not the tumbler you insert the key into but the ignition switch located down under the dash behind the steering column. Can also be a loose or corroded battery cable, or the connections at the starter. There is a starter solenoid that can be bad but it is built into the starter which you replaced.
signs of a bad starter solinoid should be a slight clicking and no-crank
Check your alternator and your connections form the battery to the Starter. You may just have a bad connection If that does not work, your solenoid on your starter has gone bad, a new solenoid or starter may be needed. Check the start switch on the clutch pedal if so equiped.
The solenoid is connected to the starter and for the backyard mechanic if one is bad they both are bad. When you purchace a new starter it will have a solenoid attached so dont worry. Getting your hands on just a solenoid for that vehicle might prove to be a chore. I'm having the same problem and wanted to ask the same question about a 92 Sable 3.8. I'm thinking that if you don't hear a click when you turn the key it may be that the solenoid/relay is bad. I checked my solenoid with a tester and it is getting juice so I still don't know for sure if it's the starter or the relay but I'm thinking more towards it being the relay because I don't hear any clicking sound that the relay usually makes... Can anyone expound on this and help me out??? I'd appreciate it... Thanks.
sounds like the starter is bad. its underneath on the passanger side where the engine meets the trans. Raise the vehicle. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Disconnect the solenoid wire and battery cable on the starter solenoid. Remove the 2 starter bolts. Remove the starter motor noticing the position of the shim between the starter and the engine if equipped. (my 95 Z28 didn't have one) Installation is reverse of removal. Be sure to replace spacer shim correctly if it has one.
Check the timing.
