I've been trying to find an answer to that question as well. This subject is really not touched upon online. The only thing close enough to answering at least the ethical portion of this, is the discovery of the deplorable working conditions that workers in China have to live with to produce this and many other products. This of course means cheaper prices for us in the U.S. , but as for me, I'm trying to avoid China-made products altogether not only for safety but ethical reasons as well.

Most enamelware coming out of China is completely food safe. Over the past few years, there have been concerns of high lead levels in solid red colored enamelware. This has prompted Customs Officials to more carefully monitor all enamelware coming in from China & Indonesia.

Golden Rabbit is a manufacturer of enamelware and has a lot of good information regarding lead testing in enamelware.
