I had a car suddenly stop while I was driving once when I was approximately 30 miles or less from home. Luckily, it stopped right at a car parts store. The man checked the battery and it was okay, so he checked the alternator and it was bad. After he jumped it, he recommended that I go straight home because the battery would just go dead again. Going that distance, I didn't have any problems, but I had been going away from home and he said he wouldn't try to get to where I was going about 10 miles up the road and then go back home.
No It will not hurt a car to jump start with a bad Alternator. Only if you put the cables on backwards. Jeff 25 years Automotive Tech It has been my experience that although you can jump-start a car with a bad alternator and drive it, the car will eventually die while you are driving (usually in a spot where there is no one around to help you jump start it again). I recommend a jump start and then go to an auto parts store to buy another alternator.
You should never drive a car around for long after jump starting a dead battery. This puts an enormous strain on the alternator. Alternators are designed to keep a good battery charged, not to charge a dead battery. You can easily burn out a diode in the alternator. Jump start the engine and drive it somewhere and connect a battery charger to the battery and charge it fully.
If an idler pulley is broken, I would advise not to drive it anywhere. It would effect the power steering, water pump, alternator and coolant fan causing you to get stuck on the road and possibly cost many more $$ in damage.
Yes, the battery starts the engine, and as long as the battery is fully charged the engine will start. The battery will loose it's charge if the alternator is defective and not replenishing the charge of the battery but the alternator has nothing to do with starting the engine.
while i was driving my car shuts off at nite while the lights are on, and i got it started back up and shuts off and comes back on ******************************************************** If you have a bad alternator it can cause starting problems. More likely because you were driving and not charging the battery, while draining it. The alternator re-charges while you drive. When you turned it off & came back the next day there was not enough juice.
The alternator is below pipework and fittings and will take a long time to remove - according to my mechanic. Going to do it myself even though it will take me even longer!
Yes. FYI answer Once the engine is running, the alternator supplies the electricity for the car to run and it also recharges the battery. Once you have jumped the car to get it running, you can take the battery out and throw it away and the car will run until you shut it off or run out of gas.Not a good idea to do this. In doing so you risk damaging the alternator.
Divide the distance by the rate.
no, there is only: a laser pen, a jumping blow and a pair of goggles but no long distance hearing gadget.
Before a long drive you have to bring the car to your mechanic for an inspection and a check up. He'll suggest you what should be fixed before you go for a long distance drive.
