For me, it was a lot of reasons.

1. I wanted to decorate myself and my space with things I haven't seen in stores. I would suddenly be struck with a "wouldn't it be cool if...?" and realised I could probably make it happen.

2. Utilitarian reasons. Sometimes you need something, and sometimes you can make it.

3. Just another way to stay busy. Keeping your hands involved in crafting is a stress reliever in a lot of different ways. If it's something easy, you can zone out and relax with your thoughts. If the project is more tricky, you can forget your daily problems and focus on the task at hand. And making things tells your subconsious that you're contributing to either your life quality or society in general, which is a nice feeling.

4. To gain insight. Rounding out life skills by trying new things is fun IMO, and can help you understand shockingly unrelated situations more clearly. Not to mention being able to look at something and say "I know how that was done".

5. Just for the sense of accomplishment. Having a finished product is a nice and clear indication of time well spent.
