In the sense that a photographer or artist tries to "capture" an aspect of a scene, yes, Leonardo da vinci tried to make present for the viewer more than just a person's physique. However I would not say that he tried to capture a soul like one would, say, capture a person's credit card information. It was a metaphysical side of his work. I believe that as part of his work he may have tried experiementally to enter another's existence in order to more accurately be able to depict that person and their activities.
'Let no man who is not a mathematician read the elements of my work.''It had long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to them. They went out and happened to things.''Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.'
Da Vinci drew the first relaxed portraits with misty landscapes in the background. He used warm and passionate colours to create the misty look on the landscapes. Da Vinci had a different way of painting with mixing colours. Da Vinci did not put eyebrows on his painting. Da Vinci changed the way people painted and made sculptures. Da Vinci was famous for the way he used light in his portraits. It seemed as if you could see into the soul of the paintings.
da Vinci the scientist observed nature and systematically recorded his observations. He studied every detail of the human body by dissecting corpses. In his study of animals da Vinci focused on the mystery of flight. His copious notes covered a vast range of topics from the sun, moon, and stars, to fossils and flying. His works provided a base for scientists to work from for centuries. During the Renaissance, math and science went hand in hand, thanks to the Greeks. da Vinci, along with other artists of the day, used geometry to produce a new style of painting, a style that allowed the observe to see the scene as in real life. This developed into the concept of perspective, which used light and depth perception to depict a 3D scene on a 2D surface.
Leonardo De Vinci was the greatest painter of his time and his work is revered today. He kept three paintings with him to his death. The Mona Lisa was one of them. Too precious to part with. It had the enigmatic smile of several of his works. The hands are another trademark. Shown as an expression of a persons demeanor and character. The "smile" perhaps the refection of the persons soul. His power of expressing so much detail with shadows is in evidence here. The Mona Lisa and "Our Lady of the Rocks" share that and an obscura background. Layers of lacquer painted over the back ground to give it depth. This small picture can never have a price put on it. It belongs to a world that needs this beauty. It is for all to see, not for one person to possess.
James Brown is known as the Godfather of Soul, referring to Soul music.
