If the nut isn't tight on the end of the axle, the splines on the axle, in the hub or both can wear out.

What is an axle spline?

Splines are parallel grooves on the side of a shaft that engage with matching grooves in a socket. They allow power to be transmitted between two rotating elements. Splines are used on axles to allow them to be removed and replaced.

Techniques of fitting keys and splines?

It is usually one or the other. Keys are simple, the key goes in the slot and the pulley is aligned and pushed on. Splines usually have a smooth section on the end of the shaft to rest the pulley on, make slight contact with the end of the splines and slowly turn the pulley until you feel the splines match.

How do you replace the cv half shaft on a 1993 Toyota Camry?

Loosen the nut on the end of the axle while the car is still on the ground. Jack the car up and support it. Take the lower ball joint loose either by taking it out of the spindle or take the 3 bolts out of the lower control arm. You may have to take the tie rod loose also depending on how much play there is. All cars a a little bit different. Remove the nut and washer from the end of the axle and swing the brake assembly and spindle out of the way. Put a large flat screwdriver or pry bar between the inner end of the axle and the transmission and pop the old axle out. If it is a two piece axle, take the clip out holding the axle in the center support before you try and pop out the axle. To put the new one in, slide it in the transmission making sure the splines are lined up and pop it in place. Reverse the process with the brakes and spindle.

When replacing the passenger side cv axle on a 1993 3.0 Taurus does it have to go all the way in to the trans axle?

Only if you want it to work.lol. Yes it does, if not you will leak fluids and put the axle on a bind making it wear faster or break. it could even damage the splines in the tranny

It will not go together, you will not be able to get the retaining plate to match up with the bolt holes until the splines are meshed together.

If your 91 Ford Escort Lx on the passenger side the CV joint still needs to go in about a half an inch and all the tranny fluid comes out there when the car is on a hill what do you do?

Sounds like the splines and or the "C" ring is damaged. Under normal circumstances the axle should snap into place firmly. Remove the axle and examine it. With a little luck only the axle is damaged and you can replace the axle with a rebuilt one.

What does it mean if your car axle is wearing out?

In front wheel drive vehicle they have an axle running to each tire. the axle has a constant velocity joint which helps it maneuver the angle to the tire. when they wear out they will click and eventually go out as in come apart and leave you on the side of the road. If your axle is wearing out in a truck it could be the splines are wearing which is rare or the bearing or bearings that hold it in place right inside of the wheel is going out.

How do you replace a rear right axel in a 2002 4x2 Chevy s-10 pick up?

You have to take the differential cover off and remove a C clip that holds the axle shaft. that will allow you to pull out the axle (****** note the number of splines on the axle if ordering part!!!!)

Will a 69 vw bug trans fit in a 68 bug?

no. 68 was still swing axle rear end. 69 has IRS. the only way you could use it if you took the side plates off both cars and took the differentials out and swapped diffs and side plates, but its more work than its worth, just get a used swing axle from a junk yard. I think any swing axle tranny will work from 61 or 62 up to 68. you just have to use your axles from th 68 tranny. up to 66 were short axles and short splines, 67 long axles short splines, 68 long axles long splines.

Could a bad axle make a loud roaring noise?
