the best way to start out is to undo all the wiring on the intake, then take off your belt, alternator, alternator bracket,hoses,manifold,2 gas lines and Power Steering pump, then take off your valve cover and remove your push rodes and rocker arms and leave them in order from which you took them off then take off. then take off your head bolts and replace them to or else it will blow again then you should be able to take your head off, and heres a lil trick to help it from blowing, buy some aluminum spray paint and paint the gasket block and head right before you put it on and it will help the gasket seal.

∙ 13y agoMan o man, If you are talking about the fabled 4100 or 4.1 that they used to torture smaller mechanic shops you have a handfull. The 4.1 has sleeves and a few other design flaws that made almost everyone i come across run hot or blow head gaskets. It can be done but almost all return. Sorry

hello, i have the same problem with my 87 camry. I took it to a mechanic and he was trying to tell me they would have to find the problem and then replace al kinds of stuff, he quoted me approximately $600.00. I am not an idiot so I check around. I got prices varying from $120-$350.00. Finally I went to Auto Zone and asked a rep. He said with these older cars it is usually a worn out gasket that is the problem. it cost me $17.00 for a new gasket and $3.00 for a gasket sealant. I am going to (and so can you) change this myself. basically it is a pan held together with a few nuts and bolts. take it off and clean it (very important) with a razor or something to smooth out the surface and then put the new gasket and sealant on. (don't forget to drain the oil first) hope that help. and honestly it shouldn't cost more than $200.00 no matter where you go.
