First step in removing the ignition switch is to disconnect the battery . Next, remove the key cylinder by inserting a wire, or paper clip into the small hole located about the 2 o'clock position of the key. There is a special tool made for this , but i have used a small hard wire (paper clip) with no problems. Try putting the key in, look at the shiny key cover, and insert the wire into it, pushing in, and then turn the key counter-clockwise, just a bit, and remove the wire, the ignition cylinder should pop out. You can now remove the bezel, and the ignition switch can be removed from the back side of the dash panel.
The bezel on the back side has one flat side on it. This piece simply pulls off of the ignition switch. Next, you can remove the wire plug from the switch, by pushing in on the two tabs with a flat tip screwdriver, or a like tool. It will expose the 7 prongs on the ignition switch. I am not a mechanic, but i am very mechanically inclined, and learn alot from trial and error, so far my lessons have been successful. Good luck!

Notice the small hole next to the key hole on the face of the lock, insert the key and turn it to the accessory position. Using a small pin (paper clip will work) insert the pin into the small hole and continue to turn the key counterclockwise. The key turn for you and allow you to pull the lock and key out of the switch. Now you can turn the bezel off to remove the switch out of the dash board.
A bad ignition switch can shut down a vehicle's electrical system. Ignition switches have been the cause of a major recall by General Motors.
assuming the battery and cables are good and connected....check the ignition switch..:)
More than likely because of a short. its probably a shorted ignition switch
Dead battery? Loose or dirty battery cables? Bad starter solenoid? Bad starter? Neutral switch?

Removing the ignition key switch from a 1998 Chevrolet truck is a relatively straightforward process. Before beginning it is important to make sure that the truck is off and the battery has been disconnected. To begin you will need to remove the steering wheel by first removing the center wheel nut with a 12" socket and wrench. You should then use a steering wheel puller to remove the wheel. Once the wheel is removed the ignition key switch will be visible in the center of the steering wheel. To remove the ignition key switch you will need to remove the retaining clip and then unscrew the bolts securing the switch in place. After the bolts have been removed the switch can be removed and replaced with the new one.
Begin by removing the retaining ring at the top of your 1986 Toyota pickup truck ignition switch. The ignition switch will slide out. Remove the wiring harness from the back of the ignition switch.
