You have to slip a plastic strap used for banding skids,etc. through the window and wrap it around the door lock. Pull it tight and up at the same time. This will unlock the door. Do not pry to hard on the window when you slide the strap down the window to the lock.

∙ 17y agoThe ignition key also serves to unlock the steering column. If the steering wheel is turned after the key is removed a clicking sound will be hear and the steering wheel is then locked in this position. There is now sometimes force against the lock and the key won't turn. Pull the steering wheel left or right slightly and hold while trying to turn the key. The key should then turn freely without any resistance.

With the wheel locked you have to turn it a little to take pressure off the cylinder or else the key won't turn. Most likely when you did it the second time you just stumbled on the fact that the wheel needed to turn a little so you could turn the key.
