When they give out, the car won't start and it will crank real easy and faster. If going bad, possibly you'd notice it slip timing because the teeth are wearing off, but I haven't experienced that. They've always just broke w/o warning, which is why you need to change them at the recommended intervals. For interference engines, it is critical to change them timely because a broken timing belt on these can cause major engine damage due to the valve slamming against the piston.
