How do you repair a 1990 Volvo 740 GL that won't start but will turn over?

i have 89 gle it was doing the same thing , and it was the fuel injetor relay (black 1 undre the hood) I have a 1991 740 which suffers from no start when hot (engine turns fine). Apparently, and this is from a Volvo trained mechanic I'd trust with my life, the fault in these earlier models lies with the fuel pump relay (which he's replacing in a few days). The relay lies behind and slightly above the fuses which are accessed from behind the ashtray, and in an emergency may respond by being tapped a couple of times. Otherwise wait for around 20 minutes and try again.

∙ 16y agoThis question is extremely Vague but will give you a few pointers. 1. If the Alarm is activated, the car engine will not turn over 2. If the Key is not put into the Ignition, it would be difficult to start the vehicle. With the Understanding that the first part of this answer is meant to ease the stress, think about this: If the Engine does not turn over, it can be the Alarm, Weak Battery, Ignition Switch, Burned Fuse, corroded wire, dirty battery, ect... 3. If the Car does turn over but will not start check the following: Fuel Pressure, Sign of Spark to the Plugs, Spark from the Coil, Hope this helps you

Its 1 of two things. Bad chip in key, or its the antenna that goes in a circle around the key hole to read the chip in the key. It will get worse and worse until one day it will never start again.

Sounds as though it needs to be serviced. Take it to a Volvo garage and get them to service and repair it.
