If you have a working key of the same type (door, trunk (boot), etc) simply take it to anyplace that makes keys and they can copy it. If you do not, you will need to take your title (proof of ownership) to any locksmith who can make a key from the VIN number / or the dealer who can do the same thing.
There are a couple of ways to get a key made without a key, or when one is lost. For a vehicle one can be made from a code which when decoded gives the cuts of the physical key.
Another way is by disassembly of a lock to determine the cuts.
Another way is by impressioning, when a blank key is used in a keyway and a mark made, then filing on the marks until a key turns.
Some vehicle keys once made might have to be copied onto a transponder key to let the vehicle run.
Locksmiths are usually pretty good at making a key on site when someone losses their key.

According to my owner's manual you must contact a BMW dealer to replace the key.
you can go to the dealer and give them the VIN # and they will order you a precut key from the manufacture.
You will more than likely have to get a new ignition and key for it.
This must be done at the dealership. I did not have a spare and lost my only key. Key had to be special ordered. The car towed to the dealership and programmed. $400.00 for new key and keyless remote.
That is the dealers responsibility. It should be included with the purchase of the new key.
