For a 1994 Lumina APV (3.8L), simply rotate the tensioner using a long adjustable or simlilar wrench (for torque) or tratchet/socket counter-clockwise. The tensioner is pulley-like mechanism between the Power Steering pump and the water pump. Once rotated, there will be slack in the belt to remove it from the remaining components.

Use the diagram (sticker) inside the hood cabin (near radiator) as a reference for routing the replacement belt. Position belt and rotate tensioner to provide slack for final belt placement (over alternator pulley) and release tensioner.

This is probably a similar procedure for your 1993 APV.

u dont unless u beat the sh*t out of it, or if it has very high miles, that motor is over head vlave not over head cam so it doenst have a timing belt, it has a timing chain which donsent need to be changed unless stated above.

first of all, disconnet the neg cable from the battery. Then take of the airfilter housing all the way to the intake (everyting plastic).

remove the front passenger tire, then then plastic barrier in the wheel well.

it is highly recommended that you use a jack stand on the front passenger side of the vehicle. next get a floor jack or your car jack will work just fine.

place the jack under the engine (flat surface area where the trans bolt to the engine is the perfect spot), raise the jack until it is secure under the engine.

Now loosen the two front motor-mount bolts about 1 inch (may need to completely remove), now lower the engine on the jack, until you can easily get to five little bolts securing the crank-shaft pulley (they are 8mm bolts).

remove the five bolts. now loosen up the 4 10mm bolts holding the water pump pulley inplace. go ahead and loosen up the alternater bolts there are 2 holding a bracket in place, then one behind the adjusting bracket (will have to get your hand in there and feel for it. don't forget the 2 12mm bolts on the bottom of the alternator (if you don't loosen up the alternator, then you will have a hard time putting the belt back on). Now remove the alternator adjusting bracket bolt from the water pump.

now get underneath the vehicle to pull the crankshaft pulley off, may have to twist and manuver it a bit.

next is to remove the timing belt cover, will be easier if you use a 1/4 inch rachet with a 10mm deep socket. after you get the cover off, make sure that you turn the engine to get the timing marks aligned on the camshaft sprocket and the crankshaft sprocket (sorry, I dont have a picture). if your car did not have any problems starting or with the timing in the past, then just make some marks on the sprockets and the housing plate behind them (liquid whiteout works fine for this). loosen up the timing belt tensioner. now slide the timing belt off the sprockets without moving the either sprocket. If you have been losing any oil, then now is a good time to change the camshaft and crankshaft oil seals (if you do change the seals, then use a thin coat of #2 gasket sealer on each seal, when installing). I normally use some brake parts cleaner to clean the area within the timing belt, let dry and start to replace the timing belt; making sure there is no slack in the belt. now push the tensioner by hand until it is firmly against the belt and keeping the belt tighten and tighten the tensioner inplace. once the timing belt is installed and inplace. turn the engine two full cycles to make sure that the timing marks stay aligned.

if the marks still line up after two complete turns, then put the timing belt cover on and tighten, then the crankshaft pulley and the 5 8mm bolts. then the waterpumt pulley and hand tighten. now put the alternator and powerstering/AC belts in place in tighten.

put the airfilter housing stuff back together. don't forget to connect the sensor wire on the airfilter housing.
