It is estimated that between 30 and 130 men, some of them disguised as Mohawk Indians, boarded the three ships from England (the Dartmouth, the Eleanor, and the Beaver) and, over the course of about 3 hours, dumped all 342 chests of tea into the Boston Harbor.
They didn't dress up. This is part of the fable. The Boston Tea Party was a protest of the lowering of the cost of the British tea by the government and the East India tea company who had gotten a bail out from the crown in 1773. The smugglers in the colonies found the Dutch tea that they sold was higher in price than the British tea, so they staged the Boston Tea Party and others in harbors in the colonies ( Hamilton was one of the largest smugglers in the colonies and a founding member of the Son's of Liberty). The cost of tea also went as far back as the Navigation Acts and the restricting of trade to and from the colonies passed from 1650-1733. Tea was also taxed in 1767 in the Townsend Acts.
Everyone survived the Boston Tea Party, it happened in the early evening. One or two guards on the ships got a bump on the head when they boarded the ships, but other than that no one got hurt.
No exact count is available of the number of colonists who participated in the Boston Tea Party. It was an illegal act and claiming to have participated was not advisable until the Revolution was well under way and the British had evacuated Boston. However, it is believed that 30 - 130 people participated in dumping the tea cargo of three different ships in the harbor.
