My understanding of the magnitudes of earthquakes is that each decimal point is equal to a magnitude of strength 10x more than the previous number. Example would be that a 4.2 earthquake is 10x stronger than a 4.1 earthquake. Therefore, a magnitude 8.5 EQ is 100x stronger than a 7.5 EQ.
The difference in magnitude is 1 (7-6). However this represents a difference in the seismic wave amplitude of 10 times. And a difference in energy of 31 times.
As such a magnitude 7 earthquake has seismic waves with an amplitude 1 times greater than a magnitude 6 and with 31 times the energy.

It was a pretty terrible event that affected thousands of people. It can be confusing talking about the magnitude of an earthquake as different countries can use different scales (Japan uses a different one from the international standard as one example). The 28 March earthquake was Magnitude 8.6 as measured in Northern Sumatra, Indonesia at 4.09 pm in 2005. The extra energy release to go further up the scale is exponential (meaning that a magnitude 2 earthquake is much more than double the energy of a magnitude 1 earthquake).
