I will assume you are distressing a piece of furniture. First make sure the piece is in good repair, all patching done, loose paint taken care of and the entire piece has been lightly sanded to ensure a good base coat. this is essential for a good finish. Coat the piece in a good quality paint and allow to dry, then top coat with the colour you have chosen for that purpose. Allow the entire piece to dry throughly. Then using a medium grit sandpaper start sanding the places that wear would naturally appear. Edges, corner, areas were your hands touch often like around handles and table edges where people sit. Start out small, take off some, stand back and look at the overall piece. Go back and do a little more. Remember this is not a process you can reverse.
