So when the quake hit, there was nothing to contain the vibrations to a small area. Instead, the quake was able to spread across 22 states. With the jagged crust on the west, probably because of the multitude of fault lines, quakes are not felt too far from the epicenter like today's east coast quake. Fortunately for us, a quake in San Francisco is not felt in Los Angeles and vice versa.
