Many Ford V-8's number 1 cylinder would be located on the passenger side bank most forward cylinder. It would be helpful to know which engine you have to be sure.

If you are in the drivers seat it is the front left cylinder. Here is a hint for you. On almost all V engines if you look closely you will notice that one cylinder is actually forward of the others. For instance on the 305 if you place a straight edge directly over the spark plug to the other side of the engine you will see that the other spark plug is further back than the #1 plug. The cylinder farthest forward is number 1.

The firing order for 78 Regal with a 305 v8 is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. The number one cylinder is the front one on the drivers side.
