In Europe at the time of King Arthur men wore very heavy armor and carried heavy weapons. Their horses also wore heavy protective armor. So the horses had to be large and strong. They used large draft breeds or draft-thoroughbred crosses. More than a particular breed they needed a "type". Large and strong that could carry all that weight.
