Well, World War II had a couple of different "endings" so to speak. V-E Day celebrates the Victory in Europe day, which was when the German Army was defeated and the Soviet Union and Allied powers advanced on Berlin. V-J Day celebrates Victory in Japan. Victory was attained in Japan through use of atomic weapons on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The United States under President Truman decided that the use of nuclear weapons was preferable to an amphibious invasion of mainland Japan; a risky tactic that some planners believed would result in half a million deaths on the American side.

It was basically WW1 part 2. Many German citizens were unhappy with the Versaille treaty terms from WW1 and felt "traitors" agreed to it. Economy was bad and politically it was unstable and Hitler was able to become Chancellor to help unify the party, unfortunately when Hindenburg died, Hitler took over and used state of war he declared to increase his powers and invade neighbors. He aligned himself with countries like Japan and for a time Russia, When Japan attacked US, US got actively involved.
