Communist countries such as the Soviet Union followed the ideas of the Spartans. The Spartans were an oppressive force, they were always required to garrison cities they have conquered. The Soviets, just like the Spartans were required to have a heavy military presence in other communist countries because they were disliked by the local population. The Soviets also followed Spartan ideology by creating a very large and powerful military force. Which dictated Spartan society.
Most countries use men for soldiers unless they are short. Then they will use older children for war.
Almost all third world countries use child soldiers. Some radical Muslim armies have been known to send children into mine fields to sweep for mines before the adult soldiers walked into those areas. They consider the children killed in these exercises martyrs that will be welcomed in heaven for their sacrifice.
Many countries these days use children as soldiers; not just in Africa but almost in every continent. Somalia, Afghanistan, Burma, Bolivia and UK are just some of the nations that practice this.
When countries are losing wars and they don't have enough soldiers whether it's due to pneumonia/death or not a lot of adult men in the area they will let children join the army/military or the children will lie about their age.
World wars or wars between other countries!
Soldiers uses are mostly to protect their countries.
They are easy to control and many times they are drugged to make them do things that they may not want to do. Sometimes they are sold into the slavery by the parents to the army. The children are also considered expendable and in third world countries life is not valued as highly as it is in first world countries. Many children are also homeless and easy to "pick up" without any one caring, thus, they become soldiers.
They become child soldiers with force, usually through kidnapping or with threats. They then go through painful, dehumanizing training which gives them their skills with weapons and the emotional detachment necessary to kill.
