Communist countries such as the Soviet Union followed the ideas of the Spartans. The Spartans were an oppressive force, they were always required to garrison cities they have conquered. The Soviets, just like the Spartans were required to have a heavy military presence in other communist countries because they were disliked by the local population. The Soviets also followed Spartan ideology by creating a very large and powerful military force. Which dictated Spartan society.

How did Sparta trade?

Unlike Athens who depended on trade, Sparta's economy depended on farming and taking control of the neighboring city-states. Sparta's environment couldn't take care of all of it citizens. In order to survive the Spartans had to take control of the neighboring city-states for the rich and fertilized soil. The people the Spartans caught after a raid were turned into slaves.Spartans had the slaves and noncitizens produce the goods they needed. Noncitizens were not slaves they were freemen. If they needed to, they were able to serve in the Spartan military. Noncitizens could not participate in the government. Noncitizens made products for money like shoes, red cloaks for the soldiers, iron tools like knives and spears, and pottery. Noncitizens also operated trade. They traded for the goods Sparta needed to survive. Spartans discouraged trade because of the fear of new ideas that would breakdown their government. Also trade wasn't easy for Sparta. Their money was iron rods not coins like some other city-states.

How did the war between Athens and Sparta affect greek government?

Volumes could and have been written about this issue. I will only mention one thing, Athens was the cradle of democracy while Sparta was known for its strict military rule. Democracy spread from Greece to other countries but it took the whole of the middle ages to pass before the ancient ideas were actually implemented in full, although the establishment of parliament for example in England can be traced back to Greece in ancient times. Read all about this in history books of ancient Greece.

Why did Sparta discourage trade?

A Spartans first and only vacation was to be a warrior, anything else would be an insult to the other Spartans. The job of trade went to the Perioikoi, they traveled all across Greece and the Aegean and made Sparta fairly rich. Spartans could travel if they wished, usually they just didn't. The city of Syracuse in Sicily was founded by Spartans. Travel was however discouraged as it tended to be the case that when a Spartan left Sparta they came back with all sorts of 'bad' habits. They were not allowed to trade and travel because they could not risk a war or battle to start on foreign ground.(Even though they were a military community)
