This means the engine's oil pressure is dangerously low, usually because there is insufficient oil in the crankcase. Another reason why this comes on is because the oil pump and/or sending unit is not sending oil through the engine fast enough to deliver sufficient lubrication.

Oil level is a serious thing and if your oil lamp does not go out after starting your vehicle (or comes on during driving) then you should turn the engine off IMMEDIATELY! Pull over and wait a few minutes, then check the oil dipstick. It is usually yellow handled.

If the level is below the cross-thatching design on the dipstick, your oil level is too low. Add oil immediately. Do not fill PAST the cross-thatching.

If the oil level is good but the light is still on, it may be an oil pump or sender issue. Have the car towed to your mechanic/repair shop for diagnosis and repair.

Ignoring the oil light will damage your engine in short order, so pay attention.

Also, if your oil light fails the bulb check at ignition (i.e. doesn't come on, then go out), you should have that fixed immediately. If the light doesn't work then you won't know there is a problem and it will be nigh impossible to prevent the engine from seizing.
