The clicking noise you can hear is the starter solenoid clicking into place. If the starter motor does not turn the engine immediately, it is probably the best place to look. it sounds like the starter motor is faulty.
If it is like my '86 Samurai there is no starter relay. It uses a starter solenoid on the top of the starter to pass battery to starter motor when the solenoid is activated via the key switch.

I just removed a 1.7 Diesel starter motor. ALLWAYS DISCONNECT BATTERY NEGATIVE TERMINAL (10 mm) Remove top half of inlet manifold (8mm 12sided socket or spanner) Undo the two plastic bolts on the expansion tank (water bottle. 10mm) Move tank out the way Look down onto starter motor; remove bolt on which goes through bell housing into starter motor (16mm ) Jack car up; from underneath look up to starter motor, remove bolt which goes through the starter into gearbox (15mm) Remove nut from starter solenoid (little part of starter motor. 13 mm) Undo Philips bolt and disconnect wire You have removed your starter motor

the starter is attached to the motor under the flywheel. look for the battery cable going from the solonoid to the motor and that will be the starter
It looks like a starter. But then ive seen a lot of them. On the back of the motor mounted to the transmission. 2 bolts and its out.
on starters that have the solenoid mounted on them, the link is a fork like piece between the solonoid and the starter clutch, which is on the motor shaft. on starters that dont have the solenoid on the starter, it just has a overrunning clutch on the motor shaft

as with any starter motor just look for the gearbox and it will always be connected somewhere to that.
Like an electric motor--usually located at the lower rear end of the engine--follow the + battery cable
