AnswerWell, I'm sure they lose the respect of members of the congregation and has a hard time trying to gain respect back. They are supposed to lead by example and use better judgment. UsuallyThe pastor knows enough Scripture to know that a pastor is supposed to be above reproach and the man of one wife, and that all that all of his personal, physical, and emotional needs are met by his wife, as God intended and intends now.If he had an affair, that is sin, as it is adultery (as it is one of the Ten Commandments of Moses in Exodus), and he should step down graciously, so as not to desecrate the holy nature of the church nor defame the pastor's position, as well as try to salvage his integrity and the remnants of his good name.
If he stays pastor, the chances of him having a truly Godly congregation that looks and listens to him as they did before they knew as slim to nil.
If a pastor has an affair, it is unbelievably rare for it to be just a slip up, as it is far too often the proverbial tip of the iceberg, or the tab to the can of worms.
Whether he is pastor of a large or small congregation is irrelevant, as it is the sin itself that is considered here. The leaders of the congregation would be justified in expecting him to leave the position as he has disqualified himself from office and the damage is done. That is quite separate, though, to the possibility of him repenting and being forgiven for those sins and restored to fellowship in the future. This does not mean he would be eligible for the ministry again as some of the other requirements for office would be difficult for him to meet.
