It was during Jimmy Carter's term as president that both the presidents of Egypt and Israel sat and came to terms for the first time in history. (the Camp David Accords)

It was unfortunately also when the Iranian Revolution toppled the Shah and imprisoned 52 US diplomatic personnel in Tehran (released January 21, 1981). It also included the start of the Iraq-Iran War.

Earlier in Carter's term, the invasion of Afghanistan by the Soviet Union (December, 1979) led to a boycott of the 1980 Moscow Olympics by US athletes and those of other countries.
