Porous rocks weather more easily for different reasons:

  • Many porous rocks are made from softer materials, thus being more easily weathered
  • Porous rocks, by definition, tend to have lots of spaces in them where, on a microscopic or even macroscopic level, areas of the rock are not connected on all sides to other rock. As a result, there is less resistance to fracture or other separations
  • Water can infiltrate porous rocks and dissolve from the inside as well as the outside - even if only very slowly
  • Because water can infiltrate porous rocks, they can be fractured from within when the water freezes

Why does permeable rock weather faster than a rock that is not permeable?

Permeable rock tends to be sedimentary rock, formed by silt deposits building up over long periods of time. They tend to be softer than igneous rock which are normally not permeable. Softer rock is worn faster than hard rock but additionally, the absorption of water can also contribute to weathering, especially in regions where the water can freeze and thaw within the rock. The freezing of water causes the rock to crack and loosen, so hastening the loss of solid rick. Igneous rock does not absorb water and so suffers damage due to ice far less than sedimentary rocks.

Factors that affect rates of weathering (rock type)?

Two key factors affect the rates of weathering rock type and climate. Rock type: Minerals that dissolve easily weather faster, softer materials break apart more easily, porous minerals weather more easily.
