One trip we explored every cave we could find and did camping and checking out historical sites. You can borrow travel books at your local library to research what attractions are in various states and areas. At the very least buy a US road map. We usually plan 300 miles a day (5-6 hours of travel) and at least 3-4 hours of stops. If you stop around 3pm you'll likely avoid rush hour in towns, may get to see a museum or go shopping before things close up at 5 some places, and still have time to swim or take a walk before sunset in the summertime.
