Join American Auto Association and order a triptik (is like a personalized booklet showing a mini map and highlights of area) and books on the states you go through if you are planning to drive the whole way.

Regional books will list hotels, motels, cafes, too. If you want to camp they have another series that includes camping spots. You'll also have towing or battery jump-start protection if you break down. (For a plus membership they'll tow you quite a ways). They will mark spots where you can expect construction.

You have a lot of choices of how far to go before turning south - you can look for destinations that you want to stop and spend time or you can choose to take the most direct route and spend time at the canyon.

We started our trip to NY going through Colorado and seeing the beautiful Estes Park area, heading toward Missouri and working our way up through Virginia one time. Another time we spent a lot of time visiting the canyon area but included Zion, Bryce, Monument Valley, Arches. The weather can be very hot.

One trip we explored every cave we could find and did camping and checking out historical sites.

You can borrow travel books at your local library to research what attractions are in various states and areas. At the very least buy a US road map. We usually plan 300 miles a day (5-6 hours of travel) and at least 3-4 hours of stops. If you stop around 3pm you'll likely avoid rush hour in towns, may get to see a museum or go shopping before things close up at 5 some places, and still have time to swim or take a walk before sunset in the summertime.
