Labor at a dealership will run about $1000, plus parts but the seal isn't that expensive.
About $1000-2000, depending upon if independent repair service or dealer.

You can pull the transmission or engine, witch ever you think would be the easyest for you. But you have to remove one of them to replace the rear main. It is a 1 piece seal and it drives over the back of the crankshaft.
You have to start by pulling out the transmission, this will give you access to the rear cover of the engine, and the rear crankshaft oil seal. You have to remove the rear engine cover once exposed, then you can pop out the old seal and press in the new one! And re-install transmission.
1987 and newer requires removing transmission and flywheel to gain access to the rear main seal. The seal is one piece and easy to replace once you gain access to it. 1986 and older requires removing the engine oil pan, oil pump, loosen all main bearing caps, remove rear main bearing cap, replace upper and lower halfs of seal. The upper half is tricky but it can be done. All bearing caps would need to be torqued to specs for assembly. I would suggest purchasing a shop manual for that vehicle if you decide to do the job yourself.
What year? what engine? What transmission? Need some more info. Basically though, you need to remove transmission or be able to move it back far enough... remove flywheel from crankshaft end... unbolt and remove rear main seal retainer... replace seal and gasket... reverse procedure.

A Jeep 4.0L has a two piece rear main seal. You have to remove the oil pan and rear main bearing cap to replace it.
dont do it
it entirely depends on what type of vehicle it is, what type of transmission is in it, the age of the vehicle and if the rear main seal is part of the oil pan gasket. Impossible to answer without vehicle informations.
Depends on whether its a 4X4 or RWD.
You will have to replace the rear main seal. This will require that the transmission be removed.
I just gotten a quote for a 2001 ranger 2wd 3.0 automatic. The quote was $550 to replace the rear main seal. This is from a privately owned repair shop.
