An island is a place surrounded by water. It can be very tiny or it can be large like Hawaii. A continent is one of seven divisions of land on the globe. You need to know this so you know where you are and where other things are in the world. Different countries make up a continent. For instance, the United States is on the North American continent. Knowing this tells you the location of the US in the world and that Europe is not the same as the United States because Europe is also a continent.
