To avoid it you eliminate the cause ... which is the reflection of the flash off the retina of the eye:
- position your flash away from the camera (at an angle to the eyes)
- make sure the subject isn't looking at the flash when it goes off
-dont' use a flash, increase the natural light around the subject
- use a bounce flash which is indirect and angled away from the central axis of the eye
- use red-eye reducers included on some cameras. They use 1 or more low level flashes to make the eye react and close the iris more, thereby reducing red-eye.
