Answer 2These satellite images are a montage made up of literally hundreds, if not thousands, of individual photos taken in "strips" [a series of photos taken in a straight line] as a satellite passed over an area.
This one image may represent dozens or more satellite passes which occurred over a period of days or months. Later, all the individual images were merged by computer into the one which we observe.
Although I'm a layman in this field, that black rectangle appears to me to be the result of a "glitch" in the multiple images taken, and thus "missing" picture data, and as a result of NO data, that part of the final image is rendered in black by the computer system that combined the strip photos and created the final image.
Answer 2 - Additional info resulting from a comment. For miles in all directions I see no red, EXCEPT for a round red DOT to the west on the coastline. THAT red dot is a marker link to a file created by a group that made a visit to the Eqi Glacier. The only other not white or black object is a blurred panel of images to the north and slightly east of the subject black panel(s) which appears to me not red, but instead reddish brown which is either the earth showing through the the ice, OR, it appears to me that that area was not totally covered with ice at the time the photo(s) in that section was/were taken.
If a Google Earth server is not available for connection (due to network problem etc.) and you have flushed your cache, the screen will be black.
There are a number of causes of graphical issues in Google Earth. In some cases you just need to clear your local cache and restart Google Earth. Another workaround to switch from DirectX to OpenGL Mode (or vice versa) and/or try running in safe mode. You may have to reinstall Google Earth or get the latest version.

Earth dies too.Either one of two things will happen: 1. The amount of helium in the sun will get so small and the amount of carbon dioxide will get so big, that the Earth will be swallowed by the sun.or2. The sun will explode and form into a big black hole and Earth and all the other planets will be going in the black hole.
