Depends on what you want to do and you own abilities. Many photographers like myself have no formal training at all but learn by just doing it and reading books. The basics of Photography are really very simple and can be learned from a book in a day. But to be a good photographer, wither you're self taught of formally trained, requires shooting thousands of photos to learn to use your camera intimately.
If you want a high end professional job, you will usually need a college degree. Otherwise most photo jobs don't normally require any formal education, but it can help to have it
What counts in photography, as in any creative or artistic profession, is how good you are, how good you portfolio is. If you can get to that level on your own that's great, if not then take whatever courses you need to get there.

∙ 12y agoThis depends on what kind of photography you would like to pursue. If you can afford a high-end digital camera, then you don't need much technical training as the camera will do all the work for you. Just read the instruction manual very carefully.
Also, in this digital age you will likely benefit by taking a class or two in the software that you will use to process the pictures after you have acquired them. For example, Photoshop, Corel, and so forth. The software that comes with the camera will be fine if you want personal pictures of the family and your vacation. However, if you have professional plans, you will have to invest in one of these professional (and rather pricey) programs.
If your subject material is more journalistic, then you might consider journalism classes (or books), to learn what the professional and legal standards are. If you are interested in artistic images, you might consider art classes that will teach you how to use lighting, perspective and so forth to generate effect. Be cautious about the art classes, though, because a lot of them are really bad.
